Captopril is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure aids in the prevention of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure, protect the kidneys from damage caused by diabetes, enhance survival and minimize the risk of heart failure in individuals with a cardiac ailment known as left ventricular hypertrophy. Captopril belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It reduces specific molecules that restrict blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely and the heart to pump blood more effectively. Captopril may cause side effects that include dizziness, salty or metallic taste, decreased ability to taste, cough, fast heartbeat, and tiredness.
