Pioglitazone is a type 2 diabetes medication known as a “glitazone.” It is used to treat excessive blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. It works by restoring your body’s correct reaction to insulin, decreasing your blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar levels can help avoid kidney disease, blindness, nerve disorders, limb loss, and sexual function issues. Diabetes management may also reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Pioglitazone can be used on its own or in conjunction with other diabetic treatments. Pioglitazone comes in a form of a tablet. It is usually taken once daily with or without meals. Take pioglitazone at around the same time every day. Pioglitazone controls type 2 diabetes but does not cure it. It may take 2 weeks for your blood sugar to decrease and 2 to 3 months for you to feel the full effect of pioglitazone.
